Course description and aims

Course description and aims
The course focuses on methodological bases of social sciences. Topics include Research Interests of Social Sciences, Models and Observation of Social Sciences, Methodology and Philosophy of Social Sciences, Agent Based Modeling for Social Sciences, Social Sciences as Artificial and Design of the Glocal(Global & Local) Social & Economic Systems as New Constructed Reality. We also treat the topics of econophysics and artificial intelligence as special lectures.
In this course we especially focus on methodological issues of social sciences of artificial. In modern society we have developed social and economic systems that are accompanied by the development of technological systems. Social and economic systems are artificial ones that include not only technological artificial but also institutional, organizational, social, economic and cultural constructed realities. In this course we give a methodological perspective on socioeconomic systems as artificial ones.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand basic concepts of modern social sciences.
2) Understand methodological aspects of social sciences.
Develop not only understanding but also the capability of discussing and applying methodology to focused social issues.

Keywords

Methodological bases of social sciences, Models and Observation of Social Sciences, Philosophy of Social Sciences, Agent Based Modeling for Social Sciences, Social Sciences as Artificial, Econo-physics, Artificial intelligence

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

In each week, we give a lecture of the week on Tuesday (First day of the weekly lecture cycle).
The lecture materials will be shown in class.
Students should read the given materials and submit a report about the topic of the week by Friday morning (discussion day of each week), and give an oral presentation for discussion.

Course schedule/Required learning

Class 1 Lecturer Cycle 1 Introduction Assignment You can download a glossary of social sciences. http://www.faculty.rsu.edu/users/f/felwell/www/glossary/Glossary.pdf Please look the glossary and consider how your speciality is related to concepts of social sciences that are shown in the glossary. Please create your own short glossary to show the relationship between your speciality and concepts of social sciences until 8th April. Not only describing the meaning of key words, please show the relationship between word on your presentation. Until Noon On 8th April, you have to submit the report and your presentation PPT or Key note file as attached files of comment field of this assignment topic of the week.
Class 2 Lecturer Cycle 1 Introduction Submit the report for the assignment and make a short presentation and discussion.
Class 3 Lecturer Cycle 2 Research Interests of Social Sciences Assignment Please find an example of socially, economically or culturally embeddedness and explain who are embedded, how it is embedded in what situation. The example should be related to you or your related situation and it is expected as not only embeddedness of pre modern context but also modern or post modern embeddedness in new reality. You also try to clarify Please upload a report abut 3 page and presentation slide such as PPT or Key Note. You have about 5 minutes presentation time at Friday lecture.

Class 5 Lecturer Cycle 3 Models and Observation of Social Sciences Assignment Find your own example of “Observational Theoretical Gap in Social Sciences” and please explain the gap from the following points of views. 1) Explain the theory you have find? Why you have focused on the theory? 2) What kind of observation is required to support or verify the model? 3) How the observation is obtained? Is it independent from theory? 4) How the model can be unfolded by considering more complex boundary conditions in the model for more translational modeling. Please upload a report abut 3 page and presentation slide such as PPT or Key Note. You have about 5-10 minutes presentation time at Friday lecture.
