Course description and aims

Chemical plant life cycle engineering is considered in this course. There exist interactions between engineering business steps which constitute a plant lifecycle, and the defect of an engineering step is actualized as abnormality of other engineering steps. Because of this property of lifecycle, it is necessary to provide a framework to perform the plant lifecycle engineering to manage the lifecycle safety. We have developed a business process model for performing a plant lifecycle engineering using IDEF0 activity model. In this course, the business processes model is considered as the framework, and the problem of process safety management and the systematization of technology through the life cycle, such as, "change management" issue, "accident analysis" and "process hazard analysis", are discussed. Furthermore, by applying the template approach to generate the generic business process model, a practice to develop a framework for a research project is performed and the students present their developed framework.

Student learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1.Understand the business process of plant lifecycle engineering which is constituted of plural engineering steps.
2.Apply the business process model of plant lifecycle engineering to problem analysis and solution of the process safety management (PSM: Process Safety Management).
3.Generate a generic business process model as IDEF0 activity model by using the template which is composed of PDCA engineering cycle for any engineering processes.

Keywords

Plant Lifecycle Engineering、Process Safety Management、Business Process Model、IDEF0

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

Handouts for each theme are used for this course. Up to practice and presentation, students are required to do homework on contribution and root causes for a process safety incident case. Finally, practice to make a generic business process model is carried out, and the result of the practice is required to be presented.
