[Summary of the course] This course covers basic concepts on the reactivity of functional metal complexes.
[Aim of the course] Metal complexes are widely used in reaction chemistry, catalysis, and materials science, etc. Their chemistry becomes more important in modern chemistry. Reactivity of metal complexes play a vital role not only in inorganic synthesis but also in organic synthesis and catalysis. This course covers the homogeneous reactions of metal complexes. Students learn reaction patterns of metal complexes systematically, and understand the mechanistic aspects on the reactions of metal complexes. Furthermore, students understand the structure-reactivity relationship.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) presume the characteristic properties of metal complexes in terms of their structures.
2) explain mechanisms of the reactions of metal complexes.
metal complex, coordination chemistry, coordination bond, ligand-design, reaction mechanism, kinetics, stereochemistry, homogeneous catalysis
✔ Specialist skills | Intercultural skills | Communication skills | Critical thinking skills | ✔ Practical and/or problem-solving skills |
This course will proceed in the following order: (1) analysis of metal-complex-reaction, (2) ligand-substitution reaction, (3) oxidation-reduction mechanism. In the last class, exercise problems and explanation of the answers will be given to assess the students’ level of understanding.

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
undecided.
Course materials are provided during class.
Students will be assessed on their achievements of learning outcomes based on final exam (80%) and level of class participation (20%) (The level of class participation will be calculated by small examination etc. in the lecture).
No prerequisites are necessary, but enrollment in the related course (Advanced Molecular Design of Metal Complexes I) (CAP.A463) is desirable.
