It is essential to learn synthetic methods of polymers for polymer science and engineering. In fact, polymerization capabilities of monomers and initiator species are different depending on chemical structures of monomers. Furthermore, polymerization conditions and mechanisms are also different depending on combinations of monomers and initiators. Chain polymerization is a universal concept on synthesis of vinyl polymers. The purpose of this course is to learn "radical polymerization", "radical copolymerization", "cationic polymerization", "anionic polymerization", and so forth. For students at the other graduate majors, this course provides opportunity to learn about frontier researches in the fields of polymer chemistry.
Chain polymerization is an essential method to synthesize vinyl polymers from vinyl monomers, and many general purpose polymers are synthesized by chain polymerization. This course explains fundamental subjects of polymer synthesis by chain polymerization for students who do not have backgrounds of polymer science and engineering.
Students will have following abilities from this course.
1) Students can explain chain polymerizations by radical, cationic, anionic, and metal compound initiators.
2) Student can explain methods to regulate molecular weights and their distributions of polymers and to introduce functional groups to polymer chain ends.
