Course description and aims

[Summary of the lecture] This course deals macromolecular chemistry focusing on the electronic properties together with their functionalities. Relationships with other chemistry fields (organic chemistry, macromolecular chemistry, chemical engineering and energy conversion) will also be discussed. Topics partly include frontier molecular sciences found in applications such as batteries, photovoltaics and light-emitting devices.
[Aim of the lecture] A goal of this course is understanding of the cutting-edge chemical science and technology through an interdisciplinary learning. In particular, this course aims to provide a basic paradigm including pai-conjugation, donor-acceptor charge transfer, required to understand and design conducting polymer materials.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) List up major conducting polymers and explain the conducting mechanisms.
2) Explain the mechanisms of solar cells and organic light-emitting dioldes in terms of the electrochemistry of pai-conjugating polymers.
3) Explain what is required to improve the device performances based on the material design.

Keywords

conducting polymers, poly-acetylene, poly-aniline, solar cells, organic light-emitting diodes
