In biochemical reaction engineering, emphasis is placed on the use of biocatalysts in production and material transformation. An overview of recent topics on screening and breeding of biological resources, reaction kinetics of biocatalysts, bioreactor, bioseparation, genome technology and genetic engineering, biomeasurements, and environmental biotechnology is provided. Students are expected to aquire basic knowledge of biotechnology and biochemical engineering from this course.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Explain characteristics of microorganisms and its cultivation conditions
2) Analyze reaction kinetics of microbial culture and bioproduct
3) Explain characteristics of enzymes and its reaction kinetics
4) Explain design and operating condition of bioreactor, and methods for separation of bioproduct
Chemical reaction engineering, Enzymatic reaction, Microbial Fermentation, Bioseparation
✔ Specialist skills | Intercultural skills | Communication skills | Critical thinking skills | ✔ Practical and/or problem-solving skills |
Required learning should be completed outside of the classroom for preparation and review purpose.
In order to deepen students' understanding of the lecture content and promote their ability to apply it, the course includes exercises, presentations, and discussions on recent topics in bioprocess engineering, as well as a report.
Course schedule | Required learning | |
---|---|---|
Class 1 | Introduction to Bioprocess Engineering | Overview methods for screening, storage, and breeding of microorganisms |
Class 2 | Reaction kinetics of biocatalysts | Analyze reaction kinetics of enzymes and microorganismsreactor |
Class 3 | Bioreactor | Understand fermentation, sterilization, control and measurements of bioreactor |
Class 4 | Separation and purification of bioproducts | Overview bioseparation and chromatography |
