This course gives an intense immersive experience, in cooperation with the Japan Atomic Power Company (JAPC), which includes understanding and analyzing nuclear severe accident (SA) phenomena to threaten the integrity of reactor containment vessel in both viewpoints of nuclear safety and security. The class lectures at Tokyo Tech cover analysis of severe accidents using a simple method, an overview of the severe accident analysis code, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (NPP) accident progression, and its evaluation results. The exercise at JAPC incudes operation of boiling water reactor (BWR) major equipment, BWR reactor operation, simulation and analysis of accidents (design basis accidents, severe accidents, the Fukushima Daiichi NPP accident, and similar accidents), and facility visit at Tsuruga Power Station.
This course aims to help students understand nuclear severe accidents through simulation and analysis of accidents, to provide them with experience the importance of interface (common and antagonistic) design between nuclear safety and security through nuclear power plant visit, and consequently to have them build the quick response capability to respond adequately to nuclear disasters beyond design basis accidents.
By taking this course, students will learn;
1) Comprehensive and systematic thinking and responding capability to nuclear disasters beyond design basis accidents
2) Technological capability necessary for quick nuclear disaster response
3) Importance of interface design between nuclear safety and security
