Course description and aims

This course covers the history and background of ionic liquids, contrasting ionic liquids and molecular liquids while giving an overview of the features of ionic liquids. The course will then focus on structural parameters for ionic liquids, and students will deepen their understanding of bulk structures and surface structures as well as distinctive electron structures. The course then covers properties and functions of ionic liquids, introducing the latest examples.

Student learning outcomes

[Objectives] By taking this course, students will gain an understanding of the structure, properties, and functions of ionic liquids that are gaining attention as next generation liquids, from a physical chemistry perspective.
[Topics] Ionic liquids are in the liquid phase, without a fixed shape, and have a high degree of structural formation possibilities that come with microscopically seen large-scale fluctuations. This property produces functions that differ greatly from the structure and physical properties of normal molecular liquids. We will attempt to further develop our understanding of material science, and gain a comprehensive understanding that encompasses quantum chemistry, thermal mechanics, chemical reactions, electrochemistry, and interfacial chemistry.
