[Description of this course] This course will focus on topics related to “process system synthesis” and “process monitoring and control” and each topic consists of 4 classes.
In “process system synthesis”, topics include design of reaction and separation systems using computer simulations, conceptual design of a total process system with recycling, and a design project contest. Topics in “process monitoring and control” include programming for process monitoring and controlling systems, analysis and modeling of the process, and a design project contest.
[Aim of this course] The concept of modeling, simulation, evaluation, and optimization for process design is essential in the field of chemical engineering. The aim of this course is for students to gain an understanding of the concept of chemical engineering design related to process system synthesis and process monitoring and control. In order to nurture students' creativity, students are divided into small teams and their results are evaluated in the process contest.
At the end of this course, students will be able to design a chemical process project related to process system synthesis and process monitoring and control with certain design constraints to acquire the ability to solve chemical engineering problems with multiple answers. Students will have the chance to tackle practical problems using both experimental study and computer simulations and to obtain the skills to improve design by not merely trial and error methodology but also by applying knowledge acquired through the chemical engineering course.

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend a certain length of time outside of class on preparation and review (including for assignments), as specified by the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Undergraduate Learning (東京工業大学学修規程) and the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Graduate Learning (東京工業大学大学院学修規程), for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Assessment is based on the quality of the report.
Full attendance and completion of all experiments are compulsory.
Students must have successfully completed Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry Laboratory III (CAP.B305).
