Course description and aims

This course focuses on better understand about the fundamentals of polymer chemistry and polymer physic and related lectures, based on the excerise of the topics.
Students will have the chance to tackle practical problems by applying knowledge acquired through this course.

Student learning outcomes

At the end of the half of this course, students will be able to:
1) Explain several topics related to polymer.
2) Have an understanding of polymer and based on this, solve basic problems related to polymer.
3) Read documents related to polymer science in English.

At the end of the second half of this course, students will be able to:
1)Explain the conformation of polymer chain.
2)Explain how the polymer chain expansion is correlated with the excluded volume effect.
3)Explain the construction of Flory-Huggins theory.
4)Explain how the solution properties depend on the concentration.

Class flow

(For Saito Class) Towards the end of class, students must solve the problems assigned on that day's class. Nominated students present the answer. The students must familiarize them selves with topics described in the required learning section before coming to class. Attendance is taken in every class.

(For Furuya Class) Students must solve the fundamental and important problems. Nominated students present the answer.

Class 1 Stepwise polymerization: Polycondensation Use the exercise problems to better understand the reaction mechanisms and the characters of polymers synthesized by the topics covered, and evaluate one’s own progress.
Class 2 Stepwise polymerization: Polyaddition reaction Use the exercise problems to better understand the reaction mechanisms and the characters of polymers synthesized by the topics covered, and evaluate one’s own progress.
Class 3 Chain polymerization: Radical and ionic polymerization 付加重合における反応設計、分子量設計、反応速度解析、共重合体組成算出を行う
Class 4 Structure of polymers - Primary structure and assembled structures- Explain the primary structure, the stereoregularities and the assembled structures.
Class 5 Intrinsic properties of polymer chain - Chain models and excluded volume effects - How is the chain expansion correlated with the excluded volume effect?
Class 6 Polymers in solution - Theoretical treatments - Explain mixing of polymers with solvents in terms of the thermodynamics.
Class 7 Self-study Summerize the lectures from No1. to No.6.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
