[Summary of the course] In this course, nucleophilic additions of aldehydes and ketones, synthesis and reactions of carboxylic acids and nitriles together with acidity, and chemistry of carboxylic acid derivatives based on the properties of carboxylic acids and nucleophilic acyl substitution will be explained.
[Aim of the course] Students learn that many useful compounds can be synthesized by utilizing characters of carbonyl groups. Also students can acquire ability to discuss reaction mechanisms (organic electron theory).
By the end of this course, students acquire the following abilities to:
(1) Explain nucleophilic additions of aldehydes and ketones with showing movement of electrons.
(2) Explain synthesis and reactions of carboxylic acids and nitriles as well as acidity.
(3) Explain synthesis and reactions of carboxylic acid derivatives based on chemistry of carboxylic acids and nucleophilic acyl substitution.

This course will proceed in the following order: (1) aldehydes and ketones based on nucleophilic additions, (2) carboxylic acids and nitriles together with acidity, (3) carboxylic acid derivatives and nucleophilic acyl substitution. In the last day, practice problems and
interpretation of them will be carried out to confirm the level of understanding.

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
