Course description and aims

[Description of this course] This course will focus on thermodynamics and the kinetic theory of gases required for the design and optimization of chemical processes. Some exercises concerning thermodynamics and transport properties will also be conducted.
[Aim of this course] This course aims for students to understand phase equilibrium and chemical equilibrium and how to estimate transport properties required for the design and optimization of reaction and separation processes.

[Student learning outcomes] The target of this course is to explain and analyze phase equilibrium and chemical equilibrium and how to estimate transport properties required for the design and optimization of the reaction and separation process.

This course will cover (1) phase equilibrium, (2) estimation of transport properties with the kinetic theory of gases, (3) chemical equilibrium.

Class 5 Kinetic theory of gases To explain the kinetic theory of gases.
Class 6 Transport properties: viscosity, thermal conductivity, diffusion coefficient To explain how to estimate transport property using the kinetic theory of gases.
Class 7 Fundamentals of chemical equilibrium To explain fundamental equation for chemical equilibrium.
Class 8 Thermodynamics for chemical reaction system To explain thermodynamics for chemical reaction system.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students will be evaluated based on their understanding of phase equilibrium, the kinetic theory of gases, and chemical equilibrium. Students' course score will be decided by considering all of homework, exercise (attendance), final exam.
