In the field of applied chemistry, process fluids having high temperature, high pressure and corrosive reactivity are used to produce chemicals and the construction of the plant, the design of the equipment and maintenance of them are needed. The operation will be dangerous when the whole process of design theory is not grasped. In addition, a skilled person who can understand not only mechanics but the corrosion problem and drawing of the apparatus concerned is necessary for accepting a device and carrying out the maintenance. In this course, lectures will be presented to explain such concepts and students will gain an understanding of them through exercises and drafting.
[student learning outcomes] As a basic matter to design the chemical equipment by taking this course, understand the basics of strength of materials, and to learn the design method necessary for chemical equipment, the allowable stress, the selection method of the pipe and the thickness calculation of the thin wall cylinder. In addition, the basics for reading and drafting of drawings of chemical equipment are mastered. The aim of this course is for students to learn applicable methods to manufacturing or maintenance as well as design of the chemical equipment in chemical industry or the related fields.
[competencies] By this lecture, the basic way of thinking for the design of the chemical equipment and an ability to understand the drawing of the chemical equipment are acquired.
Tension, Compression, Sear, Bending, Failure, Allowable stress, Piping, Thin-wall cylinder, Anti-corrosion design, Projection method, Sectional view, Dimension, Fitting
✔ Specialist skills | Intercultural skills | Communication skills | Critical thinking skills | ✔ Practical and/or problem-solving skills |
In strength of materials and the design theory classes, 70% - 80% of each class is devoted to explanation of topics. To allow students to get a good understanding of the course contents and learn practical application, questions related to the contents of this course are provided in Exercise. About the drafting, a drafting method and the drafting example are shown in each class, and the drafting exercise in conjunction with lecture contents is conducted to deepen students' understanding. Both design and drafting are required about the orifice.
