Course description and aims

[Summary of the course] In this course, in order to acquire the ability to draw up a synthetic plan of the simple organic compounds, advanced contents of (1) chemistry of aromatic compounds, (2) chemistry of compounds containing oxygen and sulfur, (3) stereochemistry, and (4) substitution and elimination reactions will be explained to the students who studied Organic Chemistry III (Aromatic Compounds) and Organic Chemistry IV (Nucleophilic Substitution).
[Aim of the course] Aromatic compounds are the compound group found widely in bioactive substances or organic materials, and it is
extremely important to understand their property, reactions, and synthesis. The stereochemistry is important in understanding biochemistry as well as organic chemistry. In this course, students will acquire advanced practical skills and problem-solving skills through practice problems and interpretation of the above (1)-(4).

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students acquire the following abilities to:
(1) Explain advanced contents of chemistry of aromatic compounds.
(2) Explain advanced contents of chemistry of compounds containing oxygen and sulfur.
(3) Explain advanced contents of stereochemistry.
(4) Explain advanced contents of substitution and elimination reactions.
(5) Draw up a synthetic plan of the target compound, based on the above (1), (2), (3), and (4).

Class flow

This course will proceed in the following order: (1) chemistry of aromatic compounds, (2) chemistry of compounds containing oxygen and sulfur, (3) stereochemistry, (4) substitution and elimination reactions. In the last day, practice problems and interpretation of them will be carried out to confirm the level of understanding.
