[Summary of the course] In this course, fundamental chemistry of heterocyclic compounds including medicines will be explained.
[Aim of the course] Many functional organic compounds such as medicines, biologically active compounds, and electronic materials are composed of heterocyclic structures. In this course, students learn fundamentals of heterocyclic chemistry, and acquire the ability to design functional organic compounds.
By the end of this course, students acquire the following abilities to:
(1) Classify heterocyclic compounds, and explain the nomenclature.
(2) Explain synthesis and reactions of 5- and 6-membered heterocyclic compounds.
(3) Explain the importance of heterocyclic structures for nucleic acids, vitamins and the like.
heterocyclic compounds, cyclizations, cycloadditions, nucleophilic aromatic substitution, electrophilic aromatic substitution, aromaticity, biological activity
✔ Specialist skills | Intercultural skills | Communication skills | ✔ Critical thinking skills | ✔ Practical and/or problem-solving skills |
This course will proceed in the following order: (1) classification and nomenclature of heterocyclic compounds, (2) synthesis and reactions of 5- and 6-membered heterocyclic compounds, (3) chemistry of nucleic acids and vitamins. In the last day, practice problems and interpretation of them will be carried out to confirm the level of understanding.
