Course description and aims

This course is for students in Tokyo Tech-Tsinghua University joint graduate program. The course is held at Tsinghua University in Beijing and mainly deals with the fundamental concepts of soft materials. Since the instructors and the topics change every year, the course contents will be revised every year. This year, the course will be divided into two: the former half will deal with thermophysical properties of soft materials and the latter half will be plastics in our daily life and their relationship with our environmental issues.

Student learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students will acquire the following abilities:
1) Students will gain an understanding of the thermophysical properties of soft materials, methodology for measuring the thermohysical properties, and the related materials informatics.
2) Students will understand how the polymer material is produced and used in the daily life and how it will affect our environments.

Keywords

Thermal conductivity, Thermal diffusivity, Thermal analysis, Materials informatics, Polymer Synthesis, Plastics, Environmental issues

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills
