Course description and aims

For understanding of vibrational spectroscopy (Infrared and Raman), principles of spectroscopy are introduced first, based on the fundamental concepts of physical chemistry. Then the applications of vibrational spectroscopy to chemical products and processing, such as in the pharmaceutical industry, are discussed. Recent advances in instrumentation and measuring techniques are introduced.

Student learning outcomes

Following completion of these lectures the students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of fundamentals and applications of current Infrared and Raman spectroscopic methods for materials and process characterisation. Students will also be familiar with the broad areas of applicability of spectroscopic methods. At the end of the course the students should also be able to apply the skills learned to various systems and the real-world products.
