[Summary of the lecture] In this lecture, heterocyclic compounds in drugs are overviewed, and the synthesis of medicines including construction of heterocyclic structures is presented. Stereochemistry is also discussed. Also agricultural chemicals, functional dyes, N-heterocyclic carbenes and the heavier cyclic compounds are explained. This is a continuation of Advanced Organic Synthesis I.
[Aim of the lecture] Heterocyclic structures in drugs are overviewed, and synthetic processes of the heterocyclic medicines are explained. Stereochemistry is also discussed. Furthermore, heterocyclic structures for functional materials such as agriculture chemicals and catalysis.
By the end of this course, students acquire the following ability:
(1) Explain examples of drugs containing heterocyclic structures.
(2) Explain synthetic processes of commercially available drugs.
(3) Explain stereochemistry of heterocyclic compounds.
(4) Explain novel applications of heterocyclic compounds.
drugs, organic synthesis, stereochemistry, agricultural chemicals, dyes, heterocyclic carbenes, catalysts, heavier elements
✔ Specialist skills | Intercultural skills | Communication skills | Critical thinking skills | ✔ Practical and/or problem-solving skills |
This lecture will proceed in the following order: (1) overview of heterocyclic structures in drugs, (2) synthetic processes for commercially available drugs, (3) stereochemistry of heterocycles, and (4) recent progress of heterocyclic chemistry. In the last day, practice problems and interpretation of them will be carried out to confirm the level of understanding.

Class 7 | Practice problems and interpretation for confirming the level of understanding | Solve practice problems by accurate understanding of the above all lectures. |
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
