Course description and aims

Concerning characterization of organic and polymeric materials, this course deals with fundamentals and analysis method of various instrumental analyses.

Student learning outcomes

This course facilitates student's understanding of fundamentals and analysis method of each instrumental analysis for characterization of organic and polymeric materials.

Keywords

Vibrational spectroscopy,Fluorescence microspectroscopy,Electron microscopy,Atomic force microscopy,Thermal analysis,Permittivity measurement,Surface and interfacial tension measurement, Contact angle measurement,Electrokinetic measurement

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

Before coming to class, students should read the course schedule and check what topics will be covered. Required learning should be completed outside of the classroom for preparation and review purposes.

Course schedule/Required learning

  Course schedule Required learning
Class 1 Overview of Structures and Characterization of Organic Materials Understand structures and characterization of organic materials.
Class 2 Vibrational Spectroscopy Understand infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy.
Class 3 Fluorescence Microspectroscopy Understand fluorescence microspectroscopy.
Class 4 Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy Understand electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy.
Class 5 Thermal Analysis Understand thermal analysis.
Class 6 Permittivity Measurement Understand permittivity measurement.
Class 7 Surface and Interfacial Tension Measurement and Contact Angle Measurement Understand surface and interfacial tension measurement and contact angle measurement.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Textbook(s)

None required.

Reference books, course materials, etc.

Materials used in class can be found on OCW-i.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students' fundamental knowledge of characterization of organic and polymeric materials and each instrumental analysis will be assessed. Student's course scores are based on a term-end report.
