Course description and aims

This course focused on the basics of polymer structure, especially 1.Shape and size of polymer chain, 2.Elasticity of polymer, 3.Polymer solutions. At first, relation between the structure and applications in the organic materials is explained.
When we use polymers as materials, the control of the physical properties is important. Therefore, it is necessary to know the basic structure of polymers and control the structure for physical properties. It is desirable to understand the basic of the essence of polymers.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to understand:
1)Structure from single chain to aggregate (bulk state) in polymer
2)Physicochemical mechanism of structure formation in polymer
3)Basics of mechanism that physical properties appear in polymeric materials

Keywords

Random coil, Configuration, Conformation, Mean square of end-to-end distance, Mean square of radius of gyration, Freely joint chain, Freely rotating chain, Ideal chain, Gaussian chain, Entropy elasticity, Dilute solution, Semi-dilute solution, Concentrated solution, Excluded volume effect, Interaction parameter, Solubility parameter, Floy-Huggins equation, Phase diagram, Binodal, Spinodal, Critical point, Phase separation

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

Based on a power point files, I push forward a lecture with a question. In addition, at the beginning of each class, solution of quiz (small test) in previous class are reviewed. Towards the end of class, students are given quiz related to the lecture given that day to solve.
