Course description and aims

I Fundamental concepts on the structure and physical properties of fibrous materials including single-filament, fiber bundles and fiber re-inforced composites will be provided.
II Processing and resultant characteristics of fiber bundles and fiber re-inforced composites will be discussed.

Student learning outcomes

One of the most important application of organic materials is fibers. Fibers are widely used not only for garments but also as industrial materials. Single fibers have the structural characteristics of uni-axial symmetry and long and thin shape, which are the origin of strength against the tensile load and flexibleness against the torsion and bending deformations. Such characteristics of fibers are efficiently utilized in fiber re-inforced composites. Aim of this class is to give students fundamental knowledge on the characteristics of fiber bundles and fiber re-inforced composites.

Keywords

Fiber structure, fiber bundles, fiber-reinforced composites, cumulative distribution function of fiber strength, Interfacial shear strength

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

This course is held over two academic quarters, with part A for explaining fundamental of fiber materials and analysis of fiber structure and part B for explaining mechanical properties of fiber bundle and fibeer re-inforced composites. Contents of part A and part B are closely related. Students are recommended to learn the two courses consecutively. Classes are held mainly using a blackboard, while power-point file and video image are used additionally for providing further understanding..
