Course description and aims

This course deals with mechanical responses of materials used for design of strength of various machines. First of all, mechanical properties of various materials are explained. Allowable stress as well as safety factor is shown. Mechanical responses when tensile, compression, twisting or bending loading is applied to a mechanical material are lectured in this class.
In this course, the target is to understand the method and necessity of strength design of mechanical components with the comprehensive understanding of mechanical responses caused by loading to the components.

Student learning outcomes

Taking this course will provide:
1) Basic concept of mechanics of materials can be learned with comprehensive understanding of stress and strain.
2) Stress and strain under the tensile, compressive or twisting loading can be obtained.
3) Stress, strain and deflection of a beam under the mending loading can be obtained.

Keywords

stress, strain, tension, compression, twisting, bending,
