Course description and aims

Learn fundamentals of materials and applied chemistry that will introduce specialized subjects of materials and chemical engineering, mainly focused on freshmen from the School of Materials and Chemical Engineering, based on the introduction of materials and chemical engineering A. Also, with a view to research from the foundation, it shows the path to grow to engineers and researchers who can be active worldwide.

Student learning outcomes

Understand the fundamentals of materials and chemical engineering.

Keywords

Understand the foundation of materials and chemical engineering.

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

This lecture is an omnibus format by six faculty teachers, and introduces the foundation and latest research topics in Materials and Chemical Engineering as an example. Also, group discussion will be conducted on each topic.

Course schedule/Required learning

  Course schedule Required learning
Class 1 Energy storage devices and their analysis Understand the operating principles of energy devices and the analytical methods for elucidating the reaction mechanisms
Class 2 Electrocatalysis to realize impossible reactions Please explain character of electrocatalytic reactions against catalytic reactions.
Class 3 Design of polymers for next generation by chemical approach Understand the importance of chemistry to design next-generation polymeric materials with functionality such as self-healing ability and mechano-responsivity.
Class 4 Structure and properties of polymeric materials from the viewpoint of transport phenomenon Understand the structural characteristics of organic polymeric materials through transport phenomena such as ions, charge carriers, and small molecules. In addition, this class introduce recent applications of polymeric materials for fuel cells, secondary batteris, and solar cells.
Class 5 Introduction of functional materials for energy and environment Understand functional materials for solar light energy conversion. Students can learn the basic principle of photocatalysis, which has already been applied in the field of energy production and environmental purification.
Class 6 Advanced processing metallurgy for up-grade material recycling system and multi-material-intended structure design Advanced metal fabrication processes and dissimilar metal joining technologies for global environment protection are introduced with the latest related research works
Class 7 Mixer A mixer will be held in each class.
Class 8 The end of term examination

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
