Course description and aims

With the utilization of assisted reproduction technologies, genetic diagnoses, gene therapy, life support, ES cells, and iPS cells, modern Life Science and Technology is developing at a dizzying rate. In the course of that, numerous problems such as the following have come to the fore.
- Bioethics: problems related to human dignity and human rights
- Safety: problems related to human genome information, genetic recombination technology, human ES cell research, epidemiological studies, etc.
- Dual use: problems related to converting research findings to use for biological weapons
After the instructor presents examples and explanations for these problems, students will have a discussion with the instructor, deepening their thought process and learning new responses.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will able to:
1) Get a basic knowledge about problems of bioethics including life ethics and security.
2) Acquire ability for appropriate handling and settlement of bioethics problems.

Class flow

This is an intensive course.
Because this is an intensive course, 2.5 periods will be given for each class.
In each class, two 1.5 hour lectures with a pause will be held, and after the second one a 45 minute debate will be held.

Furthermore, we will discuss the key factor to construct a  regulation of Biotechnology
Class 2 2017/12/14 13:20-16:35 "The advent of genome-era (I) : Introduction with case studies" Suzukake J3-405 (Satellite : Ookayama Main building B04) Lecture and discussion on genomes basic and some actual issues.
Class 3 2018/1/11 13:20-16:35 "The advent of genome-era (II) : social issues with case studies." Suzukake J3-405 (Satellite : Ookayama Main building B04) Lecture on genome-based medical treatment by government with discussion of this case.
