Course description and aims

In this course, students operate instruments for mass spectrometry and NMR to determine the structures of organic molecules. Then, students attempt to solve the structure of the target molecules based on the mass and NMR data. The lecturers teach how to operate these instruments and how to analyze the obtained data. We discuss about the strategy for structural determination of organic molecules.

Nowadays, mass and NMR (including 2D NMR) analysis are widely taken for structural determination of relatively small organic molecules. Students will be able to take such spectra by themself and analyze the data for structural determination.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Determine the structure of relatively small organic molecules.
2) Operate instruments for mass and NMR by themself
3) Analyze mass spectra and NMR spectra including 2D NMR data for structural determination

Keywords

Structural analysis of organic molecules, structure determination, mass spectral analysis, NMR, 2D-NMR

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

In the first half of the class, we will discuss about previous spectral analysis taken by students. In the latter half, the lecturer teaches a main topic according to the course schedule. Students analyze mass spec and NMRs outside of the classroom.
