Course description and aims

This course aims to learn implementation of design solutions into actual business. In the process of implementing design solutions into actual sustainable business, you have to assess feasibility of the solutions.
Toward establishment of the new business, you have to consider various aspects such as business model, marketing strategy, financial policy, and you have to compose your business plan. You will learn these subjects through lectures and group works.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will:
1) gain knowledge necessary to establish business plans to realize design solutions into actual business.
2) acquire skills to draft design plans through exercises.
3) be able to communicate and discuss with international team mates.
4) be able to present their own ideas in effective way in English.

Class flow

Students work in groups throughout the semester. In the beginning of the semester, design solutions will be introduced for which student groups will work on the business plans.
Consecutive two weeks cover one theme. Students will learn concepts and methods in the first week. Then students work in groups in the second week applying what they learned in the previous week to develop business plans.

Class 6 Group work: Market Reflect on markets for design solution of own group.
Class 7 Lecture: Competence Understand how to think about competences.
Class 8 Group work: Competence Reflect on competences of design solution of own group.
Class 9 Lecture: Business plan Understand required contents for business plans.
Class 10 Group Work: Business plan Draft business plans for design solutions of own groups.
Class 11 Presentation: Business plan draft Present drafted business plans and discuss on them.
Class 12 Lecture: Finance Understand financing.
Class 13 Lecture: Intellectual property Understand intellectual properties including patents.
Class 14 Group work: Refine business plan Refine own business plans.
Class 15 Pitch (Final presentation) Acquire skills to present business plans in short presentation (pitch) styles.
