Course description and aims

Communication design defines why and who you want to do what (or what you want to achieve with who), suggests and implements approaches for achieving this goal, evaluates the results, and provides feedbacks. Communication design is a design for achieving cooperation among people who do not share the same contexts. In the class, students will learn a methodology for discovering future needs and creating a path to business start-up by redesigning communication using the GPIO cycle, taking up the unfortunate cases of excellent ideas that have not spread as products or services.

Student learning outcomes

-To explain the principles of communication
-To derive and explain the GPIO cycle for each case introduced by instructor
-To identify issues to be repaired for solving personal and public problems and express them in the GPIO cycle
-To explain the difficulties that need to be overcome to business start-up with a new idea
-To design a communication design to turn an idea that cannot overcome the barriers to business start-up into a prospective
business

Class flow

For each class:
・The instructor (1)answers the questions and comments from students on the contents of the previous class, (2)clarifies the essential points on the lecture unit and (3) facilitates the group works. Reading a textbook is highly recommended for active participation in the class discussion and group works.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
