Course description and aims

On the basis of many students in the Industrial Engineering and Economics Course researching business activities, the instructor will lecture on basic knowledge such as the goals, rules, and management of corporate activities such that they gain an understanding of the nature of companies. This course is an introduction to developmental research in business administration (management strategy, marketing, accounting, financial management), finance, and corporate economics. In the first six weeks, Kotaro Inoue will explain the institutional design of joint-stock corporations which play the largest role in a modern capitalist economy, and then explain the basics of business management such as management strategy and investment evaluation. Students will leverage the basics of business management learned in the course, and deepen their understanding of actual corporate management through case studies and corporate analysis. In the next four weeks, Chung Su-Lin will explain the fundamental concepts of marketing and international business. In the following four weeks, Kyoko Nagata will lecture mainly on accounting and the relationship between cost and earnings, after which students will attempt to draw up a business plan.

Student learning outcomes

The instructor will increase student' interest in corporate management itself, and the student will learn the basic knowledge essential for life as a member of society who deals with companies. Students will gain an understanding of the system of a corporate society itself, verify the connection between the courses in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Economics and the reality of corporate management, as well as increase awareness of problems with the orientation of respective research.

Class flow

Three instructors will share in giving lectures. Kotaro Inoue will first lecture on the joint-stock corporation system, business strategy and organization, and the basics of joint-stock corporations such as investment evaluation and corporate governance, then apply this knowledge and incorporate it into case studies. Next, Chung Su-Lin will lecture on the basics of marketing and international business, and run a case study in week 4. Continuing, Kyoko Nagata will lecture on business activities and short-range profit planning from an account perspective. Students will apply this knowledge to drawing up and debating a business plan.

Assessment criteria and methods

Three instructors complete evaluations for their respective sections, calculating the total points weighted for class time to reach the evaluation. For Professor Inoue's section, 80% of the evaluation is based on points for class debates on case studies, and 20% of the evaluation on exams.
