This course focuses on topics which students in the science and engineering field should learn before joining a laboratory, and provides lectures and discussions on basic knowledge of the intellectual property rights system, retrieval and utilization of patent information, patenting of research results, patent applications and scientific papers, intellectual property issues in industry-university cooperation, industry trends surrounding intellectual property, global intellectual property activity, idea creation and patent requirements, intellectual property knowledge for creativity training, motivation and creativity, etc.
In order to further improve the international competitiveness of Japanese industry, there have been calls to strengthen the dissemination and awareness of the intellectual property system for science and engineering students, as an urgent challenge. In particular, in the specialized fields of engineering and experiment, it is important to foster a sense of value for the legal protection of research, and it is necessary to acquire basic knowledge of intellectual property rights and learn to be conscious of intellectual property, from the early stages of the undergraduate program. Since the intellectual property system became an international norm to protect technology, in this course, it is considered as a goal to acquire basic knowledge about the intellectual property system.

First, learning from the historical evolution of institutions of the intellectual property rights system, we will deepen our understanding of the needs and aims for intellectual property protection, furthermore we will gain an understanding of the outlines of the intellectual property system. Among intellectual property rights, we will especially focus on the patent system which is important for science and technology human resources, gaining an understanding the whole picture of the system from the top down. The concept of novelty and inventive steps will help students to understand the protection of their own research findings. Technical content described in patent applications around the world is published as patent information, and the use of patent information will be helpful for research and development in companies and research institutes, also defining their patent strategy. In addition, we will learn the relationship between research findings and patent applications in research institutions such as universities, patent management in industry-university cooperation activities, patent management and strategy in enterprises, and today’s issues surrounding intellectual property.

Class 8 | Design Law Overview | Understand the foundation of the industrial design protection method. |
Class 9 | Intellectual property management in industry-university collaboration | As to the return of research results to society as the third mission of the university, consider what type of intellectual property management is necessary within the university. |
Class 10 | Trademark Law Overview | Understand the basics of trademark law protecting marks such as company name and product brand name. |
Class 11 | Intellectual Property Right Lawsuit | Introduction and explanation of court case on the basis of intellectual property lawsuit, benefits of appeal, burden of proof and so on. |
Class 12 | Current issues surrounding intellectual property(Standardization) | We introduce case examples on domestic and international issues concerning intellectual property right and think about future appearance. |
Class 13 | Intellectual property management in electrical industry(1) | Invite corporate intellectual property manager to introduce intellectual property activities within the company. |
Class 14 | Intellectual property management in medicine and chemical industry(2) | Invite corporate intellectual property manager to introduce intellectual property activities within the company. |
Class 15 | Summary of basic knowledge on intellectual property systems | As a comprehensive summary, we will organize the basic knowledge on intellectual property management. |

Students' course scores are evaluated based on general understanding of the intellectual property system and utilization of patent information, based on final exams (70%) and reports in the class (30%).
Full attendance is compulsory.
No prerequisites are necessary, but enrollment in the related courses is desirable.
