Course description and aims

Lecture on the basic technology to deal with information about a disease and health appropriately in Japan and put on the knowledge needed the engineer who builds the system to deal with medical information.
To learn information processing in the medical field, overall technology and knowledge are needed. So we learn information processing technology of hardware, software and network technology, the sense of ethics which it's needed when treating medical information in Japan, information protection technology and standardization of the medical information.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Acquire knowledge related to the medical information systems systematically.
2) Understand the practical use and application of the medical information sysytem and future subject.

Class 1 Medical care and Information Technology Understand the efforts of medical informationization in Japan and explain the importance of informationization in the medical field.
Class 2 Medical Record System Understand the legal positioning of electronic medical record in Japan and the security technology required there, and be able to explain the requirement for electronic medical.
Class 3 Radiology Information System Understand the imaging system used in the hospital and be able to explain the standard technology such as DICOM used there.
Class 4 Hospital Information System Understand the outline of hospital information system and be able to explain standardization technology such as HL7 used there.
Class 5 Integrating Healthcare Enterprise Understand the necessity of IHE in medical information cooperation and be able to explain its mechanism.
Class 6 Telemedicine/Regional Medical Cooperation Understand the efforts of regional medical cooperation in Japan and be able to explain new efforts such as IHE, SS-MIX.
Class 7 Network System for Medical Cooperation Understand the network technology used in the medical field and become able to explain the problem of constructing a medical exclusive network.
Class 8 Future Subject Understand the problems for promoting medical informationization in Japan and explain the tasks necessary to solve it.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students will be assessed on their understanding of the medical information systems, the current situation and the present issues of healthcare IT.
Students’ course scores are based on class reports (50%) and final report (50%).
