Course description and aims

Students are required to conduct computer simulations of real data transmission, which aims to make the students deeply understand error detection codes and protocols of data transmission.

Student learning outcomes

The purposes of the experiment are to quantitatively evaluate how severely factors deteriorate transmission performance of the data transmission, and to learn some techniques for computer simulations.

Keywords

digital modulation/demodulation, noise, fading, error detection codes, CRC, protocols of data transmission

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

After lecturers explain principles and methods for computer simulations, students are required to make simulation programs, to run them, and to write reports on the results.

Course schedule/Required learning

  Course schedule Required learning
Class 1 Explanations of data transmission experiments I and II. Start Experiments I and II. Confirm principles of the data transmission experiments.
Class 2 Continue Experiment II. Conduct Experiment II.
Class 3 Continue Experiment I. Conduct Experiments II and III.
Class 4 Start Experiment III. Conduct Experiment III.
Class 5 Continue Experiment III, and measure run time of Experiment III with parameters being the byte number and file size. Conduct Experiment III and measure its run time.
Class 6 Continue to measure run time of Experiment III. Measure run time of Experiment III.
Class 7 Continue to measure run time of Experiment III. Measure run time of Experiment III.

Class 10 Continue to solve problems of CRC. Solve problems of CRC.
Class 11 Start experiments of CRC. Conduct experiments of CRC.
Class 12 Continue experiments of CRC. Conduct experiments of CRC.
Class 13 Continue experiments of CRC. Conduct experiments of CRC.
Class 14 Continue experiments of CRC. Conduct experiments of CRC.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend a certain length of time outside of class on preparation and review (including for assignments), as specified by the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Undergraduate Learning (東京工業大学学修規程) and the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Graduate Learning (東京工業大学大学院学修規程), for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Textbook(s)

Guide for the experiments to be distributed.
