Course description and aims

Various big data, being stored in the information storage, can be analysed and used to provide solutions for solving social issues and values through ICT (information and communication technology) and electronics technology which support human intellectual creativity. The age of IoT (Internet of Things) and digital society has come. As services grow from things to events, and value to digital society is becoming an important factor alongside economic value. Business and society is being dramatically changed and we need to reconsider what issues to address.
This course focuses on the information storage technologies supporting IoT and digital society. Topics include the read/write operation principle and the head and medium technologies in the magnetic disk and tape recording, the optical recording (eg, the magneto-optical, the phase-change, and the organic dye optical recording) technologies, and the storage systems such as the disk array. By combining lectures and exercises, the course enables students to understand and acquire the fundamentals of information storage technologies and industries, the research and development systems in companies, and the literacy necessary for global human resources who can succeed in the world.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to understand:
1) the information storage technologies supporting IoT and digital society.
2) the read/write operation principle and the head and medium technologies in the magnetic disk and tape recording,
3) the optical recording (eg, the magneto-optical, the phase-change, and the organic dye optical recording) technologies,
4) the storage systems such as the disk array,
5) the fundamentals of information storage technologies and industries, the research and development systems in companies,
6) the literacy necessary for global human resources who can succeed in the world.

Class flow

In each class, the feature of teh information storage technology and market will be explained using power point files and prints with actual circumstances of research and development in the global companies, which will be useful to decide on the course to take the career to pursue after graduation. At the beggining of first course, students must to visit an electronics retail store to survey and understand the present situation of storage products such as HDD and SSD. At the end of first course, students must to make presentations on the future of the information storage from the view point of its market and technologies, which will be helpful for students to improve their presentation and communication skills. Students are given the lectures and "task" (Reading and understanding of the related paper, answering to the simple questions) at the end for overall understanding.

Class 5 Simulation, fabrication process and analytics technologies for HDD Understand the simulation, fabrication, and analytics technologies fully used in the industry such as HDD
Class 6 Head and medium technologies for HDD Understand the feature of HDD heads and media and challenges for increasing the areal density of HDD from the view point of nano-technology
Class 7 Magnetic tape Understand principle of magnetic recording system and magnetic tape (from analog to digital, VTR, helical scan).
Class 8 Removable media Explain magnetic removable media, floppy, evaporated tape.
Class 9 Outlook of other information technologies Explain social aspects of storage, spread to the familiar storage world, and the various storage products.
Class 10 Optical recording I Understand the history of optical recording, principle of optical recording, optical recording systems (CD, phase change, dye, red DVD).
Class 11 Optical recording II Understand Blue DVD, near-field DVD, SIL, hologram, three dimensional optical disc, super lens, multi-layer disc, and optical tape.
Class 12 Organic memory, semiconductor memory Understand organic memory, semiconductor memory (flash memory), electric tags, two-photon absorption 3D recording, and hole burning recording.
Class 13 Future storage technologies and file sub-system technologies Make presentations on the future of the information storage from the view point of its market and Understand the on-going R&D status for increasing areal density of HDD, and the feature of storage system technologies
Class 14 Presentation of information storage technologies Make presentations on the future of the information storage from the view point of its market and technologies to improve presentation and communication skills.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students' knowledge of storage technologies and industry, and their ability to apply them to problems will be assessed by means of submitted reports and Q&A at the lecture
First lecturer 50% (midterm, final reports and presentation: 1/3, 1/3 and 1/3) and second lecturer 50%.
