This course deals with electric railway systems which are one of the most important applications of electric machinery. The topics of this course include operation of trains, tracks, feeders, substations, various communications including signal and safety systems, structures, and high-speed railways.
The recent advance in the electric railway technology is quite a remarkable, especially in the characteristic improvements as a high-speed large-capacity transportation method. Recently, the electric railways attract worldwide attention due to the higher oil prices and unpredictable crude oil markets. Particularly, attention has been paid to Japanese electric railway technologies because our country is one of the most leading countries in electrification of the railway system. From this point of view, it is quite important to grasp the significance, technology, operation of the electric railways.
The aim of this course is to learn the following abilities:
1. To explain the roles and functions of electric railways.
2. To explain the necessities of each device or facility composing electric railway systems.
3. To explain the structures and principles of the devices and facilities composing electric railway systems.
