Course description and aims

This course does not follow the usual format. Students will gain first-hand experience in real world problems through internships for a specified period at companies and outside research institutes, gaining experience to leverage their expertise for practical matters. Students are certified and granted credits for these activities.

Class flow

In these internship courses, master's students in the Systems & Control course work as interns at companies or other research institutes under appropriate guidance for a specified period and learn how to practice various skills and techniques in systems and control. Course credits are awarded for the activities of the students during the internship. Students are required to gain practical skills through working experience in research/development projects at the companies or research institutes, try to develop their future career plans, consider how to use their abilities in leading future developments in science and technology, broaden their horizons through discussions with colleagues from different majors and backgrounds, and, in some cases, learn how to instruct less-experienced undergraduate students. After the internship, students should report their activities to professors including their academic advisers. The professors consider the activities and judge whether course credits can be awarded. Students who wish to enroll in these courses have to consult their academic advisers, professors who are in charge of internships, and persons at the company or research institute who are in charge of the internship, and submit their internship plans to their academic advisers, professors who are in charge of internships and education, and to the dean of the course. Those professors examine the plans and inform the students whether they can enroll in these courses or not. Students choose one of the A1, A2, B1, and B2 courses depending on the period of the internship. There are no differences between A1 and A2, or between B1 and B2, and multiple credits can be earned if students work as interns multiple times. Typically, students can enroll in A1 or A2 and earn 2 credits for internships of two weeks, or enroll in B1 or B2 and earn 1 credit for internships of one week. The course credits to be awarded are determined on the basis of the performance of the actual internship activities.
