Course description and aims

A threat of nuclear terrorism is one of the concerns utilizing nuclear materials and radioactive materials. The establishment of effective measures to prevent and neutralize the threat is required.
In this course, the fundamentals of nuclear security, nuclear materials and radioactive materials, design of physical protection systems, its fundamental physics, international regulatory frameworks are covered.

Student learning outcomes

Students gain the practical experiences by uranium enrichment verification experiment, numerical simulation of hydro-dynamics of structure material and nuclear material criticality at the university and by use of intrusion detection systems in the training field of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA).

Keywords

Nuclear Security, Physical Protection, Hydro-dynamics、Uranium Enrichment Verification、Physical Protection Training Field Exercise

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

In lecture style, fundamental physics, regulations, international circumstances of nuclear security would be explained.
In exercise style, hydro-dynamics simulation analysis, uranium enrichment verification by gamma-ray measurement at the university, exercises with physical protection training field, real reprocessing facility and fuel fabrication facility at Japan Atomic Energy Agency would be performed.
