Course description and aims

Traditional business model has not passed for current system and creation of a new value is strongly demanded in our human society. As a powerful method of creating new value, "design thinking" has attracted attention and applied not only to product development but also to services, organization development, and improvement of people's lives.
This lecture aims to cultivate the ability to extract and set subjects and propose solutions to various problems occurring in actual society by using "design thinking approach".
In addition, this lecture mainly focuses on group work, and carries out each phase of "discovery", "refinement", "quest", "experiment" and "development". Specifically, students will experience processes from discovery of "potential user needs" to "creation of ideas as solutions" through subject discovery, problem definition, sympathy, creation of ideas, prototyping, user test, and storytelling.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand and practice the mindset and method of design thinking through group work.
2) Extract and set subjects from various problems arising in actual society, and propose their solutions.
3) Communicate smoothly in the group and actively discuss.

Class flow

Students will work in small groups through 3-4 Q. At the beginning of the semester, the groups will set up subjects from given problems, and work to suggest solutions to the problems. Finally, students will provide the project or service with business opportunity.

Class 3 Preparation of the presentation Prepare the presentation of the plan while implementing group work.
Class 4 Presentation of the plan (submission of invention notification: 1st) Present the issues and solutions proposed by each group. Submit the first invention notification.
Class 5 Search and value consideration, and safety training Consider exploration and value in the task while carrying out group work.
Class 6 Exploration and prototyping Consider exploration in the task and perform prototyping while carrying out group work.
Class 7 Prototyping Create prototypes to solve the problem.
Class 8 Prototyping Create prototypes to solve the problem.
Class 9 Lecture of crowdfunding and preparation of the interim presentation Lecture of crowdfunding. Prepare the interim presentation.
Class 10 Interim presentation (submission of invention notification: 2nd) Present the issues and solutions proposed by each group. Submit the second invention notification.
Class 11 Interim presentation Present the issues and solutions proposed by each group.
Class 12 Prototyping Create prototypes to solve the problem.
Class 13 User test Perform user test and refine using the created prototype.
Class 14 Prototyping and Revised User Testing Repeat user test and improve prototypes.
Class 15 Preparation of the final presentation Prepare the presentation and check the story.
Class 16 Final presentation (submission of invention notification: 3rd) Perform final presentation using prototype and movie. Submit the third invention notification.
Class 17 Meeting for practical realization After the final presentation, discuss the practical application.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend a certain length of time outside of class on preparation and review (including for assignments), as specified by the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Undergraduate Learning (東京工業大学学修規程) and the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Graduate Learning (東京工業大学大学院学修規程), for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.


Materials (textbooks) will be provided by instructors in class.

Reference books, course materials, etc.

Each instructor will recommend as necessary.

Contribution to group work (40%), Final presentation (30%), Final report (30%)

HCB.C402: Fundamentals of Creative Design is required, and it is desirable for taking HCB.C403:Field Works for Creative Design.
