Course description and aims

This course provides four weeks intensive lectures in order to teach the basic and practical knowledge about product design and product development. Student learn knowledge required to be an entrepreneur through the case study discussions, field observation, group activities, 3D modeling and 3D printing experience, and presentation

Student learning outcomes

The goal of this course is to learn the knowledge of product design and development required to be an entrepreneur. Student can take the effective actions about product design and development as an entrepreneur.

Class flow

Firstly, students learn the basic knowledge of Product design and Product development through case study and class discussion.
Secondly, students conduct field observation to find the products (or parts) that embodied “clever design”, and appreciate their values.
Thirdly, students design original products by group works.
Fourthly, students make actual prototype of the product using a 3D printer.
At the end of the course, student groups give presentations and receive comments.

Class 2 Class discussion: The strength and weakness of Japanese production system. Explain the strength and weakness of Japanese production system.
Class 3 Workshop: Collecting “small shape” and meaning it. Find the product (or part) that embodied “clever design” by field observation, and mean (sense make) it.
Class 4 Class discussion: Disruptive innovation Explain the concept to disruptive innovation.
Class 5 Workshop: Meaning “small shape” again. Evaluate and sense make the product (or part) that embodied “clever design” found by other group member
Class 6 Workshop: Design an original “small shape” Design an original “small shape”..
Class 7 Workshop: 3D modeling basic Understand the basic knowledge about 3D modeling method.
Class 8 Class discussion: Case study (imcth 2001) Explain the design, prototyping, and mass production process of precision part using real company case.
Class 9 Guest speech: History and future of 3D shift of Japanese manufacturing industry Explain the history and the most probable future of 3D shift of Japanese manufacturing industry.
Class 10 Workshop: Design an original “small shape” (second round) Design an original “small shape”
Class 11 Workshop: 3D modeling on practice Draw an original design using 3D CAD.
Class 12 Workshop: 3D printing Print physical entity using 3D data and 3D printer machine.
Class 13 Presentations and comments (1) Present the output of the group activities.
Class 14 Presentations and comments (2) Present the output of the group activities.
Class 15 Summarization of the course Explain what I learnt about Product design and Product development..
