Course description and aims

Quantitative literacy is one of the essential abilities for well-educated citizens to apply to daily context in order to determine her/his attitude toward scientific and technological issues. In the first part of this course, the instructor informs students the concept of quantitative literacy or quantitative reasoning (QR) and how they are used in the leading edge educational practices in Japan and abroad. In the latter part, students are allocated to a group with primary school teachers in Ota-ku and propose a teaching plan to cultivate quantitative literacy of pupils in the primary schools.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will:
1. Have acquired fundamental knowledge about concept of quantitative literacy or QR in daily context and risk situation.
2.Be able to make a prototype or mock to materialize the concept of quantitative literacy.
3.Have gained experience in project management among people with different backgrounds.
4. Have developed communication and presentation skills.

Class flow
