Course description and aims

Since current human society has been supported by various kinds of industrial machinery, we engineers have to design and manufacture fine and better machines. When designing the machines, engineer need to take into account functions and performance of the machines, but also need to take into account safety and strength of the machines, economic and environment issues. In order to convey design intent to manufacturers, engineers need to prepare a drawing of the machines in accordance with the rules of the drawing. Through the design and drawing of the hydraulic jack in this course, students learn modeling of machines, design of machine elements, mechanical tolerance and fundamentals of machine drawing. In class, students prepare design specifications, assembly drawings and part drawings for hydraulic jack. Some of the part drawings are prepared by using CAD.

Students may learn machine modeling, appropriate material selection, design of machine elements and machine drawing.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students may learn fundamentals of:
1)Modeling of industrial machines
2)Strength design of machine elements
3)Preparing design documents
4)Drawing of machines

Keywords

Machine design,Machine drawing,Strength design,Machine elements,CAD

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

Every class contains a brief lecture and exercises. In order to secure the exercise time, students should read the textbook before a class. Students should bring their own PC.

Course schedule/Required learning

  Course schedule Required learning
Class 1 Introduction of the machine designed in this lecture Examination of machine parts, exercise Examine type and number of the parts used in the machine.
Class 2 Explain how the machine works Modeling of the machine Understand the mechanism of hydraulic jacks. Model the hydraulic jack.
Class 3 Determination of design conditions (specifications), design calculation Determine detailed specifications of the jack, such as maximum load and maximum lift to satisfy product functions and performances. The structure and mechanism of the machine are also considered to realize the specifications.
Class 4 Design of machine parts Design calculation and machine drawing Learn design of machine parts. Conduct design calculation and draw machine drawing for each mechanical part.
Class 5 Material selection Design calculation and machine drawing Learn suitable material selection. Conduct design calculation and draw machine drawing for each machine part.
Class 6 Preparing design documents Machine design and machine drawing Start design of the product. Prepare the assembly drawing and part drawings.
Class 7 Completion of the machine drawings Complete the assembly drawing and part drawings.Review design documents, assembly drawing, part drawings, and revise documents and drawings if necessary.and drawings if necessary.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend a certain length of time outside of class on preparation and review (including for assignments), as specified by the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Undergraduate Learning (東京工業大学学修規程) and the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Graduate Learning (東京工業大学大学院学修規程), for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Textbook(s)

Textbook named "Fundamentals of Machine Design and Drawing" is distributed by the instructor through T2Scholar.
