Course description and aims

Precision measurement technology is not only essential to measure, evaluate and control the quality of industrial products, but also plays an important role in the field of research and development.

This course will focus on the following points regarding precision measurement technology.
1. Basic knowledge of precision measurement, International system of units (SI), measurement standard
2. Geometry, pressure, force, temperature, electrical measurement
3. Analysis of measurement data, signal processing

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand measurement standards and metrics.
2) Understand principles and characteristics of various measurement methods or apparatuses. 
3) Learn processes of measurement data and practice them.

This course corresponds to following study objectives.

7. Ability to make use of specialized knowledge to solve new problems and make creative proposals

Course taught by instructors with work experience

Applicable How instructors' work experience benefits the course
One of the lecturer has 12 years of experience working with the National Research Laboratory of Metrology of the MITI for developing national standards of nanometer length, precision measurement and calibration technology, with practical experience in mechanical measurement. The practices and research contents will be reflected in the lecture.

Students are given exercise problems etc. related to the lecture given that day as necessary in the end of each class.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Assessment criteria and methods

Exercise problems (10%) and final exams(90%).
In the case of online lectures, each lecturer will give one assignment (three times in total).
