Course description and aims

Students will gain the knowledge of basic mechanical properties that have to be considered in design and selection of elements used in mechanical systems. Specifically, by focusing on shafts, screws, bearings, and gears etc. as basic machine elements in mechanical systems, students will learn methods of (i) selecting machine elements that satisfy the design specifications and (ii) designing them based on mechanical strength. They are fulfilled through lectures on the points one should note regarding the functions, types, characteristics, and methods of use of each machine element, and modeling and calculation of basic mechanical models. Furthermore, students will learn methods of expressing these mechanical elements using three-dimensional (3D) CAD software.
By learning these, students will acquire fundamental idea and specific skills toward the selection of engineering materials and design based on their mechanical strength.

Class flow

Each class of this course is held for four consecutive periods (i.e., for three hours). The latter two periods are for exercises where students work on problems related to the content of the lecture given in that day.
Students are required to self-study the contents prior to the class using a textbook and/or supplementary material. Based on this, the contents are lectured in the class about specific design cases abundantly employing explanations provided with graphics and models.

Class 1 Introduction of machine design Overall flow of machine design is learned. The role of selection and design of machine elements in it and documentation of machine design are also learned.
Class 2 Classification and mechanical properties of engineering materials Types of engineering materials and mechanical properties used in mechanical systems are learned. Important points related to selection of materials to be taken into consideration in machine design are also learned. Exercises are done at the end of class.
Class 3 Design of shafts Cases of usage of shafts in mechanical systems are learned. Basic idea and methods used in dimensional design of shafts based on strength criteria under varying load conditions are also learned. Exercises are done at the end of class.
Class 4 Design of fasteners Types and features of fasteners are learned. Idea and methods for selecting and designing threaded fasteners are concretely learned. Exercises are done at the end of class.
Class 5 Overviews of mechanical design using 3D CAD software and feature-based modeling. Understand concept and idea of feature-based modeling, and acquire ability to use them in design of machine elements using 3D CAD software.
Class 6 Basics of guide element design and 3D CAD representation Understand basics of guide elements such as bearings and their representation with 3D CAD software
Class 7 Basics of power transmission element design and 3D CAD representation Understand basics of power transmission elements such as gears and their representation with 3D CAD software
Class 8 Basics of structural member design and 3D CAD representation Understand basics of structural members and their representation with 3D CAD software

Assessment criteria and methods

Learning achievement is evaluated based on results of a final examination (50%) and exercises (50%).

Prerequisites (i.e., required knowledge, skills, courses, etc.)

There is no prerequisite for this course. However, it is desired that students have taken “Machine Elements and Machine Drawing (MEC.H201)” and “Mechanics of Materials (MEC.C201)” prior to or at the same time as this course.


Each student has to bring his/her own laptop PC to Classes #5 to #7 where CAD software (Inventor) is used.

The required specifications for the PC are listed below:

Type: Laptop PC. No tablet devices are allowed.
OS: Windows 10 64bit is required. No macOS and linux are allowed.
CPU: Core i3 or newer. Equivalent AMD CPUs are also allowed.
GPU: One integrated in a CPU is sufficient.
Memory: 8 GB or higher.
Storage: 250 GB or higher. SSD recommended.

Notes, cautions, etc.:
* Inventor software cannot be used in Mac PCs.
* If you cannot buy a laptop PC that satisfy the above specifications even though one has managed to, please consult Assoc. Prof. Murakami before one finally fix the enrollment in this course.
* An HDMI port has to be equipped. Connection using a converter is also OK.
* You may use a mouse equipped in the computer room, so you do not have to bring your own mouse to the class. You have to return the mouse after use.
