Course description and aims

History of technology developments, the current situation of the basic technology for robots in both hardware and software and several applications of these technologies are introduced.
Students can learn about the history of robot technology, basic and advanced technology of hardware and software for robots, and problems with future applications to be solved.

By the end of this course, students will learn the history and the current situation of robot technology development with several applications.

Each class introduces a different topic of robot technology. Submission of written report is required for every class.

Class 2 Mobility Assist Robots Technical trend, applications and problems of personal mobility with robot technologies are introduced.
Class 3 Robot hands Classification and features of robot hands and basics of grasping are introduced.
Class 4 Robot Middleware Robot middleware as software platforms which realize easy construction of robotic system is introduced.
Class 5 Robot Vision Technical trend of vision sensing and its applications to robot vision are introduced.
Class 6 Service Robots Technical trend, applications and issues of service robots are introduced.
Class 7 Humanoid Robots Introduce the history of humanoid robot research, system configuration, application examples, and technical issues.
Class 8 Micro and Nano Robots Methods of design and manufacturing of micro/nano robots are introduced. Their applications are also introduced.
Class 9 Surgical Robots Technical trend and problems of surgical robots are introduced.
Class 10 Investigation&Inspection Robots Technical trend, practical examples and issues of robots for disaster investigation and infrastructure inspection are introduced.
Class 11 Assistive robot Technical trend, applications, and issues of various assistive robots are introduced.
Class 12 ITS Technology Technical trend and problems of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) are introduced.
Class 13 Robot Manipulators, Structures and Components Classification and Features of robot manipulators and their applications are introduced. Structures and components of general robots are also introduced.
Class 14 Artificial Heart Technology Classification and features of artificial hearts and related technology are introduced.
Class 15 Pneumatic Actuators Classification and features of pneumatic actuators and their applications are introduced.
