Course description and aims

Students in this course learn the basic rules of mechanical drawing and the basics of machine elements and mechanical drawing for expressing such machine and elements as the foundation of a series of design courses. They also learn the basics of drawing with CAD, and deepen their knowledge about machine drawing, and working with 3D printers, machine tools, and the like, in order to acquire knowledge and skills, which will be a foundation of overall design courses.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Explain the basics of Mechanical Engineering Design and drawing through hand-drawing, and 2D, 3D-CAD of various machine elements. Understand functions, mechanics, work methods, materials of machine elements and manufacturing method of mechanical components.
2. Understand how to use drafting tools and CAD software. Basic rules such as dimensional tolerances, geometric tolerance, fitting and related standards can be explained through practice drafting trace of basic machine elements such as fastening element, shaft element, transmission element.

Keywords

Machine Drawing, Machine Elements

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

Students will be split into 3 groups, and will work on 3 large challenges, one topic every 2 weeks. Each week, the instructor will lecture on the function of machine elements, writing drawings, and various suggestions. On that basis, students will use drafters and CAD software in the second half to do practical work on mechanical drawings. Students will generally complete them during class time, and revise them appropriately based on instructor evaluations. These topics will be counted towards grade evaluations.
