Students will learn basic issues related to mechanical vibrations, mechanics of materials, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics which are the main topics in the mechanical engineering field. During the experiments on free vibration, mechanical properties of materials, heat conduction/transfer and energy storage of fluids, students control experimental apparatuses by themselves and learn about mechanical engineering topics in depth. In particular, students conduct experiments of one- and two-degree of freedom systems, tensile deformation and fracture of materials, heat conduction and transfer, energy storage of fluids and visualization of fluid flow. In the 8th class, students will do a comprehensive exercise for deepening their understanding of mechanical engineering.
The primary aim of the course is a better understanding of mechanical engineering issues and improving the ability to set problems, practical skills and problem solving skills by conducting basic mechanical engineering experiments. Additionally, through the experiments, students will develop teamwork, leadership and communication skills, methods to obtain and process data, and the ability to draw conclusions from findings and write technical reports.
By the end of this course, students will acquire the following abilities:
1) Ability to explain fundamental aspects of mechanical engineering that cannot be learned only from lectures.
2) Ability to conduct basic experiments related to mechanical engineering.
3) Methods to obtain and process data.
4) Ability to write technical reports.
Free vibration, Deformation and fracture of material, Heat conduction, Heat transfer
✔ Specialist skills | Intercultural skills | ✔ Communication skills | Critical thinking skills | ✔ Practical and/or problem-solving skills |
In the first class of orientation, the instructor will explain attitude, precautions for student experiments, and writing procedures for the experiment report. In the second and the fifth class, students are divided into two groups and complete exercises related to the experiments carried out in the course. In the third, fourth, sixth, and seventh class, students are divided into four groups and engage with an experimental topic. The written report must be submitted by a specified date. Students must read the experiment manual before the start of each experiment to ensure safety and smooth running of the experiment.
