Course description and aims

This course aims to improve the abilities and skills that will be required for students to conduct a research project and make a research presentation.
This course consists of two parts. In the first part, faculties will introduce cutting-edge research topics from 5 different research fields in civil and environmental engineering (structure, water environment, geotechnology, planning, concrete material). In the second part, students will conduct their small research project in the selected research topics under supervision of faculties via laboratory experiment, numerical simulation, field trip, and previous research review activities.

Student learning outcomes

(1) To be able to conduct a small academic research project
(2) To be able to analyze and organize the research outcome
(3) To be able to make an academic research presentation logically and clearly
(4) To be able to make an academic research abstract logically

Keywords

Research project, Oral presentation, Structure, Water environment, Geotechnology, Planning, Concrete material

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

After the introductory lectures on cutting-edge research topics from supervising faculties in the first two classes, student will select one of 5 research fields (i.e., the fields of structure, water environment, geotechnology, planning, concrete material) based on their interest. In the following classes, students will start their own small research projects via laboratory experiment, numerical simulation, field trip, and previous research review activities under the supervisions by faculties. In addition, students will prepare for their oral presentation and research abstract. Student will give mid-term and final presentations.
