Course description and aims

[Summary of the course] It is necessary to investigate related studies from literature and acquire related skills in the process of writing a bachelor's thesis. In this course, students are required to read assigned literature written in English and prepare presentations based on them. Students are also required to discuss presentations, and answer questions and comments.
[Aim of the course] In this course, students are expected to acquire the following abilities by reading the latest literature written in English: (1) understanding constitution of literature, (2) interpret English texts including technical terms, (3) the way of research into relative information, (4) training of logical thinking, and (5) acquisition of presentation abilities. Through laboratory introduction and discussion with professors and a small number of students, they are also expected to learn applied chemistry and perceive the way to select the laboratory.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
(1) Explain constitution of literature.
(2) Interpret English texts including technical terms.
(3) Survey the related literature.
(4) Consider the researches in applied chemistry logically.
(5) Make a short presentation on applied chemistry.

Class flow

The applied chemistry documents reading is carried out by the instruction of two different laboratory teachers according to the group formation of the small unit. Firstly, students attend a laboratory introduction to choose a laboratory catching the instruction. Then, students learn the collection method of the publication information in the supporting group of the library, and receive individual guidance over three times after deciding a laboratory, receiving and reading an article carefully. Finally, students make a presentation document, give a presentation, answer questions, and have comments/discussion. Finally, as a summary, a review lecture is given on how to read English articles and the way of the presentation.

Class 9 Introduction of the documents reading (1-3) Correct the oral presentation materials under the guidance of professors.
Class 10 Presentation (1) / receiving articles (2) Make an oral presentation by using the presentation materials and perform answering questions and comments/discussion. Visit the second laboratory and receiving articles written in English.
Class 11 Introduction of the documents reading (2-1) Discuss with professors about given articles written in English and understand the research background and the English expression method.
Class 12 Introduction of the documents reading (2-2) Make the oral presentation materials based on articles written in English under the guidance of professors.
Class 13 Introduction of the documents reading (2-3) Correct the oral presentation materials under the guidance of professors.
Class 14 Presentation (2) Make an oral presentation by using the presentation materials and perform answering questions and comments/discussion.
Class 15 Summary: review with regard to how to read English articles and the way of the presentation Understand how to read English articles and the way of the presentation.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students will be assessed by their accomplishment of the study at laboratory (50%), presentation materials (30%), and participation for answering questions and comments/discussion (20%) in the course goals (1)-(6).
