Course description and aims

[Summary of the course] Colloquium on Applied Chemistry I and II provide the students with opportunity of oral presentations, questions, and discussion on the independent research project in their laboratory. Literature search and preparation of logical presentation on the original papers will be guided by the academic supervisor(s). The presentation, asking and answering questions, and discussion will be performed in each laboratory. Colloquium on Applied Chemistry I focuses literature search and presentation of basic subjects.
[Aim of the course] The educational program of this university consists of (i) the course work based on the systematic curriculum and (ii) the laboratory education characterized by the tutorial guidance. Active learning is strongly encouraged in the Colloquium on Applied Chemistry I and II, which are the core subjects of the laboratory education. In these courses, students acquire (1) skills of literature search and their analysis, and (2) ability of understanding research, (3) linguistic ability, (4) skills of preparation of presentation, (5) presentation skills, and (6) ability of asking and answering questions / discussion, through the presentations of their own and of other students.

Student learning outcomes

Students will acquire the following abilities in stages by completing Colloquium on Applied Chemistry I and II:
(1) Ability to survey the original papers about the specific research theme in the field of applied chemistry
(2) Ability to compile the collected original papers and make logical presentation materials
(3) Ability to understand and reply questions in the presentation accurately
(4) Ability to understand the presentation of other students accurately
(5) Ability to make questions and discussion in the presentation of other students

Classes are held at the academic supervisor's laboratory. The course schedule will be determined through discussions held among students and the academic supervisor. In some cases, multiple laboratories may choose to hold classes jointly.
