Course description and aims

This course is intended to provide undergraduate students majoring in polymer chemistry with research experience in multiple areas of the field. Students gain access to two laboratories. Students start at each laboratory by hearing an introductory talk by the supervising faculty on the laboratory’s research and its social significance. They are then assigned a specific research topic and activities.

Although the contents of the research activities will vary with each laboratory、 all supervising faculty will allow students to (a) develop critical thinking skills by performing scientific investigations on specific research topics, (b) gain exposure to cutting-edge technologies, and (c) experience lab experiments and simulations and participate in discussions afterwards.

This course facilitates students' understanding of the research process and provides them with opportunities to experience the fun and challenges of cutting-edge research at Tokyo Tech. Students will be able to gain a broad view of their discipline and of how individual research relates to the world. This course will aid students in selecting the laboratory in which to conduct their Graduation Thesis.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course、 students will be able to:
1. Gain knowledge of trends in polymer chemistry research
2. Participate in research with faculty and debate experimental and simulation results effectively
3. Draw conclusions from experimental and simulation results through logical reasoning
4. Present research findings in a clear and logical fashion both verbally and in writing

Class flow

Students are each assigned two laboratories based on their requests. (The laboratories are referred to as A Lab and B Lab in this syllabus.) Students spend five sessions at each of the first laboratories and then five sessions at the second. On these two separate occasions, students will be given the chance to discuss what research activities they wish to engage in with the supervising faculty.

Assessment criteria and methods

The levels of attainment of student learning outcomes 1–3 through research activities carry a total weight of 60%. The level of attainment of student learning outcome 4 through report writing and giving presentations carries a weight of 40%.
