Course description and aims

This course teaches mechanical properties of composite materials starting from a topic of material selection for the production of frame of high performance bicycle. Various models to consider mechanical properties are presented. Characteristic values representing mechanical properties such as specific strength and specific modulus are explained.
The aim of this course is to obtain a sound understanding of fundamental models to consider mechanical properties of composite materials. Exercise problems are assigned during the course and explanations of the problems are provided.

Student learning outcomes

By completing this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand the specific strength and the specific modulus that are important values to consider mechanical properties of materials.
2) Understand the fundamental methods of calculation to obtain characteristic values such as averaged Young's modulus to evaluate composite materials as structural materials.

Keywords

composite materials, specific strength, specific modulus, CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics), breaking length, CNT (carbon nano fiber), rule of mixtures, averaged Young's modulus, iso-strain condition, Voigt approximation, iso-stress condition, Reuss approximation, elastic stiffness, elastic compliance, micromechanics, metal matrix composite materials.

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

Exercise problems are assigned during the course. To prepare for class, students should read the course schedule section and check what topics will be covered. Required learning should be completed outside of the classroom for preparation and review purposes.
