This course provides the fundamental knowledge on properties of various radiations and nuclei, radioisotopes, the interaction of various radiations with matter, the methods of generation and detection of radiations, the effect of radiations to human body, and the applications of radiations. The safe handling of radiations and the related laws are also described.
Although radioisotopes and radiations are very useful tools for various researches and industrial applications, the wrong usage of them gives the hazards to the surroundings. Students will acquire the right knowledge and the method of safe handling of radiations by learning the fundamentals of radiations and their applications, the technologies of measurement, etc. through this course.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Explain the law of radioactive decay and half-life.
2) Explain alpha-decay and beta-decay.
3) Understand interactions of various radiations with matter.
4) Explain methods of detection of various radiations.
5) Understand principles of accelerators.
6) Understand safe handling of radiations and related laws.
